Why Locals Love The Libertine Restaurant & Bar
Located in the historic and architecturally stunning Royal Exchange building in the heart of London’s financial district, The Libertine Restaurant & Bar marries contemporary elegance with the soul of Modern British and European cuisine. This sophisticated dining destination elevates classic British fare with refined twists, offering a culinary experience that is both innovative and comforting.
The menu at The Libertine is a celebration of seasonal produce and masterful techniques. Start your meal with enticing starters such as the Charred English Asparagus topped with a Panko crumbed St. Ewe golden yolk egg and shaved Grana Padano, or indulge in the delicate Smoked Halibut glazed with a white miso dressing, accented by pickled cucumber and toasted black sesame—each bite a harmony of smoky, tangy, and umami flavors. For those seeking comfort with a kick, the Chicken Lollipops—crispy fried chicken bonbons served with creamed corn and house hot sauce—deliver a satisfying crunch balanced with a luscious, creamy sweetness.
The mains continue this comforting yet elevated theme, featuring standout dishes like the Lamb Cutlets served alongside a peas à la Française salad, maple bacon lardons, and a rich red wine jus that adds depth and warmth to each tender bite. Vegetarians and vegans are equally spoilt with options like the Potato, Mushroom & Spinach Galette, dressed with wild garlic pesto and a semidried tomato purée, offering vibrant, fresh flavors that don’t compromise on richness. The Butcher's Block is a tempting choice for carnivores seeking the finest cuts of the day, expertly prepared to showcase quality and flavor.
Complement your meal with irresistible sides such as the Triple-Cooked Chips dusted with rosemary salt or the indulgent Red Leicester Mac—each component crafted to balance and elevate the main courses seamlessly.
Beyond the exquisite food, The Libertine excels in creating an atmosphere where polished professionalism meets relaxed warmth. Guests often commend the impeccable service—from the attentive, knowledgeable staff to the thoughtful wine pairings that heighten the dining experience. Dinell Marcus’s review highlights this with praise for exquisitely chosen Sancerre, perfectly matched to their salmon dish, enhancing every flavor note.
The ambiance is equally inviting, as Gina Johnson describes it, a "beautiful setting" that feels ideal for both solo diners and larger gatherings. The restaurant’s location inside the Royal Exchange lends an air of grandeur and historic charm, making every visit feel special whether it’s a refined business lunch, an intimate date night, or a celebratory dinner with friends or family. Morgan Snider appreciates how the team navigates group dining with ease, catering thoughtfully to dietary preferences while maintaining the lively and cool vibe of the space.
Portion sizes at The Libertine are generous and designed to satisfy, with Joselle Claudio noting the juicy, flavorful burger and perfectly cooked fish and chips as standout examples that validate the restaurant’s excellent reputation without straining the wallet. From the first bite to the last sip, this venue delivers authenticity, flavor, and genuine hospitality—a rare trifecta in London’s bustling restaurant scene.
In sum, The Libertine Restaurant & Bar is a shining beacon of Modern British dining, where every detail from kitchen to table is meticulously crafted to offer a memorable experience. Such a beautiful setting for an amazing meal! I am in the financial district of London for meetings and happened to find a local spot doing Sunday Roast...and they are doing it perfectly. The location is incredible (it is actually in the Royal Exchange building), the staff were so courteous and professional and the food - outstanding. I would highly recommend reservations. I was solo and even had fo wait (not long but make note). I am going back later this week for cocktails in the bar area. This is a must do.

I had such a wonderful experience, and yudz truly made the evening special. From the start, he was warm, professional, and incredibly attentive without ever being overbearing. What really stood out was his wine recommendation. He suggested a Sancerre to pair with my salmon, and it complemented the dish beautifully. His knowledge and confidence in recommending the right wine elevated the whole meal and showed real expertise. Throughout the evening, he ensured everything ran smoothly, checked in at the right moments, and created a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Service like that makes all the difference. Thank you, yudz — I’ll definitely be returning!

We had the best time at The Libertine for our large group dinner! Cara, Elsie and Omar took such great care of us. They paid attention to special dietary needs and ensured each guest was satisfied. That atmosphere was perfect- a very cool vibe and just right for our group. I would highly recommend checking out The Libertine for a large group dinner!

Was the loveliest experience, took my family for drinks and dinner after a show. We were greeted by Charlotte and Will on the door who were so warm & welcoming and then served by Joe & Chigozie in the restaurant. The service was 10/10, the food was 10/10. Such a great place and will definitely be back!

I visited the restaurant for my late birthday celebration. Portion sizes were massive. We had burger and fish and chips. The burger was juicy and full of flavor. The fish and chips were not dry. Prices are reasonable too for this setting. I wasn't expecting for them to treat my dessert, it was very thoughtful. Thank you.

My partner and I went for a Sunday Roast which was delicious with huge Yorkshire puddings! Service was excellent and the Sticky Toffee Pudding was lovely! Great atmosphere and wonderful architecture. Would definitely go back

We were slightly nervous when we first walked into the bar, at it was pretty busy and loud - but were glad to hear that the restaurant was in a separate section that was much quieter, but also had a great vibe to it. The food was incredible and great value, they made personalised cocktails to our liking, and our server Ailish was incredible. She had great energy, provided incredible service and made the evening more special. Thank you :)

The best Sunday Roast I have ever had (apart from my Wife’s in case she’s reading). We visited on a Sunday (obvs) on a rainy January and was really impressed with the quality of food and friendly service We thought the wines were a touch expensive, even for London, and the music playlist was a bit off kilter to the restaurant ambience, but don’t let any of this stop you from visiting a really great restaurant
